Is Church Membership Important?
Many people today think that “church membership” is an outdated way of “doing church” some would even say that church membership is not in the bible. However it’s possible we may be looking in the bible for all the wrong things. If we are looking for something like a “gym membership” then you are right we don’t see this in the bible. When we read the bible we begin to see there was mutual responsibilities between individual Christians, particular Elders and specific congregations.
For instance, Particular elders are to shepherd a particular congregation (Acts 20:28) Congregations are to love and encourage one another (Hebrews 13:1). Individual Christians are to be accountable to a particular congregation and obedient to particular elders (Hebrews 13:17). We are to pray for and support particular pastors (Gal 6:6). Put simply, Church membership identifies the particular congregation in which I will live out the commands of Jesus.
At BBC, we define membership through our Church Doctrinal Statement which is what we will believe and the Church Covenant which is how we will live. These two documents define what we mean by “church membership”
